KEEP IT CLEAN

Ever since I begun to reduce my plastic use in 2017, I noticed that quite a few of the cleaning products came in plastic. The ingredients label was also filled with unnatural sounding names and I wasn’t sure what I was actually using!
I then switched to Earth Choice Multi-purpose spray, while being much better for the environment –  it caused my partner and I to violently sneeze whenever we used it!

Once that was all used up (I hate to waste things!), I researched for natural alternatives. I came across using essential oils and common household products such as vinegar and bicarb soda as cleaning aids. I then discovered that people living a zero-waste lifestyle used ingredients such as these. Why buy multi-purpose cleaner when I can make my own and save money?

One of the most mentioned oils was Eucalyptus. It’s a common oil, usually readily available in every household. I can still remember my mum using it when I was sick as it has antibacterial properties.
The other common oil was Lemon. I had never use a lemon oil myself, but the smell of a fresh lemon is so uplifting and it’s sure to make any household chore much more pleasant!

It was during my research that I got an email from Amanda from Naturally Nature, she reached out to me offering me some teachings on essential oils and their uses. Talk about timing!
Amanda is a qualified Aromatherapist and really knows her stuff. She sent me some of her notes from her Aromatherapy workshops and it has now become my oil bible.

Amanda also invited me to try two of her cleaning essentials, Eucalyptus oil and Lemon oil. Once I received these I got straight to making my own multi-purpose spray with the recipes Amanda recommended.

 Disinfectant Spray:
I cup White Vinegar
I cup Water
6 Drops of Lemon
6 Drops of Eucalyptus
Mix all together in a clean spray bottle. Use as you would a regular spray and wipe.
Great for places that need extra antibacterial action such as the bathroom.
*as with any new cleaning item, please do a small patch test. Vinegar does contain acetic acid which some surfaces can have a reaction too.*

I used an old stainless steel spray bottle I had kept from my hairdressing days. You can use whatever you feel like, but try to repurpose what you already have. Even an old plastic store-bought spray bottle is perfectly fine to use.

I tried out this spray on my bathroom sink and while the vinegar smell takes a little bit of getting used to, it cleans better than a store bought cleaner and it didn’t send me into fits of sneezing. WIN!

I can see this solution being my main go-to for cleaning. It’s so much easier to make your own spray rather than rushing out to the store to buy a new one when you run out. Its also much more environmentally friendly as you can buy vinegar in bulk and you are reusing the same container over and over again minimizing plastic waste. You are also not buying one product for just one use. Vinegar and essential oils have so many more uses!

VINNIES X IRONIC MINIMALIST

The denim in my wardrobe hasn’t been getting enough of a workout recently. I’ve been wearing my favourite pair of pants basically every single day.

Maybe I needed a bit of inspiration to find new ways to style my denim, luckily Vinnies invited me to their August Denim challenge.

Since I love nothing more than finding the perfect op shop bargain, I accepted. Their challenge was to style denim 4 different ways chosen by me.

I headed to my favourite Vinnies on Johnston st that very weekend and got straight to work. After a bit of trial and error with the jeans section (I’m very particular with the style of my denim), I decided to use my existing two pairs of jeans and find some tops/jackets/shirts to wear with them. As any avid thrifter will tell you, it’s always a game of chance when shopping in a thrift shop. You may not find the exact thing you are after, but I think that is the beauty of it. Will you score a vintage Chanel bag or the perfect oversized wool jacket?

After finding my key items (sadly no vintage Chanel, but I did score a really cool 80’s style jumpsuit!) I headed back home to style them.

—————————————————————-

Vinnies Shirt | Asos Jeans | Nakedvice Belt | Dr Martens | Camberwell Market Bag

My first look had to be double denim, something I haven’t been a fan of in the past, but I really love this look and I feel it’s very “Brunswick”.

The shirt is an extremely oversized vintage denim shirt that I tucked into my “mom” jeans to give some shape. The bag was also a Sportsgirl vintage score from the Camberwell Sunday Market

I feel like you could also wear this one with a pair of skinny pants and belt it at the waist to give some shape.

Vinnies Grey Knit | Asos Jeans | Vintage Leather Jacket | Nakedvice Belt | Acne Boots| TDE Bag

My next Vinnies find was a grey loose fit turtle neck jumper. I am actually obsessed with high neck tops/jumpers, so I loved this little find.

Again, I used my “mom” jeans and tucked the top in. This look is a perfect casual weekend look. My leather jacket is a wardrobe staple, so that had to make an appearance!

Vinnies Silk Dress | Lee Jeans | Vintage Leather Jacket | COS Heels | TDE Clutch

I don’t usually wear jeans if I (ever) go out. But this silk Lover dress is a perfect addition to skinny jeans and block heels for a casual catch up with friends. I just tucked it in to make it wearable for the cooler weather.
You could also add a touch of deep red lipstick to glam it up.

Lastly, I couldn’t resist browsing the men’s section. It’s one of my favourite sections for oversized shirts and jackets, (I even found an awesome Qantas PJ set from there!)
This is kind of what I would imagine I would wear in a casual office situation. The oversized white shirt classes up the skinny jeans.

Ever since embarking on my Zero Waste lifestyle, I have discovered that op shopping is an environmentally friendly way to save money and still look good. In all honesty, would you have known that the above looks are from an op shop? So be like Macklemore and hit up your local thrift store before your local Zara.

Thank you to Vinnies

BLAAX create minimalistic inspired watches for everyday wear. Their range features simple, refined watches with clean faces and contrasting bands (which you can interchange).

The one thing that makes me excited about Autumn/Winter is the wide array of coats available. Everything and anything goes as long as you are warm! And now that the Autumn/ Winter season is upon us in Australia, it’s time to stock up on coats. There is nothing better than a warm, snuggly coat hugging you on a freezing cold day. Even better if it looks good!

This oversized military inspired coat from ICE express is the perfect accompaniment on a dreary winter’s day. Paired with either jeans or some statement pants, this coat is ideal for whatever the season throws at you. Rug it up even more with an extra woollen layer underneath and a cable knit scarf for warmth.

The Tee + Jeans Combo

I can never go past a good tee and jeans combination. Usually its black jeans and black/white tee, but in this case its blue jeans!

Not usually one for blue denim, but I fell in love with the light colour and “mum” jeans look of them. So comfortable

Ice Express the label has been an Australian boutique label for over 40 years. Recently, with the help of an amazing design and creative team (fronted by Claudia Roberts) it was relaunched to create the current, trend driven label it is now. Featuring garments that reflect the must-have pieces for the current season, just like these jeans!

Deliciously Matcha x Ironic Minimalist

I’m constantly drinking green tea, especially as I blog as I find it calms me and enables me to focus. So when I heard that Matcha, had a higher level of antioxidants than regular green tea I was keen to try!
Read all about Matcha’s health benefits here, perfect for that “new year, new me” resolution

Luckily, Deliciously Matcha sent me a sample of their Culinary Matcha Green Tea.
Deliciously Matcha sources their Matcha from Uji in Japan, located near Kyoto the birthplace of Japanese Green tea.
They have two grades of Matcha, Culinary Matcha Green Tea (which has a robust flavour suited for cooking) and Ceremonial Matcha Green Tea (which produces a delicate flavour and is used for drinking).

I decided to try one of Deliciously Matcha’s recipes for something a little different.
Matcha Muesli Bars are a no bake, sugar-free treat, that are surprisingly sweet and highly addictive (I could have eaten the entire batch in one sitting!)

Next, I am keen to try the Chia Pudding!

I have some pretty big things planned for 2017, so I am excited for it to arrive!

In terms of education, I have finally stared a path to chase a dream that I had for 2 years – to complete a stylist course. I signed up to begin an Australian Style Institute course in Feb. This is a pretty big step for me as I can sometimes lack confidence in myself and what I can create, but this blog has given me confidence to pursue that dream.

Ironic Minimalist will feature some changes as the year progresses. I have an amazing lady taking stunning photos of me and I hope to strengthen that bond in 2017 (Reannon Smith, keep an eye on this lady!)

2016 has been great – it gave me new opportunities and the confidence to push myself!

I am also thankful to each and every one of my readers, friends and the people who have helped me along the path of 2016 <3

Vinnies x Ironic Minimalist

Recently Vinnies invited me to take part in their #ExpressYourElf challenge. The idea behind the challenge was to change the way people think about Christmas gift giving and to show that it’s not all about the price people pay, but rather the thought behind the gift.

Shopping at Vinnies not only helps your wallet and the environment, but the profits go to fund the live changing support systems that Vinnies run. Services such as soup vans, shelters for the homeless and The Christmas Appeal.

I was actually really excited about this challenge, I’m an avid shopper of markets (Camberwell Sunday Markets and Fitzroy Saturday Markets being my faves) and love to find a bargain.

The closest Vinnies to me is on Johnston st, Collingwood and it was a small well-stocked space with friendly volunteers.

What I bought:

*White Plant Pot/Vase – I shall gift this with a little plant in it – $3
*Black Plant Pot /Vase – a little fern would look cute in this one -$2
*Japanese Glass Teapot – For the tea lover – $2
*Blush Tealight Holders – So cute! -$1 each
*Pink Tea Cup – perfect pair for the teapot – $1
*Blush Milk Jug – So much blush (I’m obsessed!) can be used for a plant holder, decor item or as a milk jug! -$4
*Own plant*

Blush is in big time at the moment, Vinnie’s is so on trend!

I couldn’t leave without buying some clothes!

*Qantas first class Pj’s  – First Class feels without the price! – Pants -$5 Top – $4
*Oversized Pj style Men’s shirt – this one is  so versatile, can be worn as a light jacket, with jeans and boots or even as Pj’s – $3
*Silk Slip Dress – Love a good slip dress, looks amazing layered with a tee underneath – $4

Can you believe I only paid $16 for all these?

20161210_123047

Overall my shopping expedition came to exactly $30 and I am so happy with all my little gifts, I found a lot more than I initially planned!

Vinnies really impressed me with the quality of their pieces in store, its the perfect place to source anything from little gifts to home decor items or even some basics for your wardrobe without paying $$$

So if you want to make a change this Christmas, give Vinnies visit for your Christmas needs.

I have been after a simple shift dress in black for quite some time now. My search started when I saw a girl walking down the street wearing a simple black shift dress, black boots and a “don’t care” attitude, I instantly wanted a dress like hers.

My search was finally over in early November when Landes Warehouse held their famous Warehouse Sale. Now if you have never been to Landes Warehouse, I urge you to go right now! Their stores are literally jam packed with bargains from brands such as Mink Pink, Somedays Lovin, Evil Twin and my personal favourite, Staple the Label.

After a (free!) hot chocolate and meeting the lovely sales assistants, I was ready to shop.
I am pretty sure I could have done 7+ rounds of the store and STILL find something that I hadn’t seen before! Once I had my hands full it was off the change rooms where the girls were unpacking even more stock!

I selected my top 4 and headed to the counter (I seriously could have chosen 10 more pieces but unfortunately my wardrobe is so beyond full!)
Everyone was so polite and I even got to see old friends (Hey Erin!)

Those 4 pieces are sure to become staple pieces over summer. So make sure you visit Landes Warehouse to pick up some unbelievable bargains for yourself or even Christmas presents.

Vaniday x Ironic Minimalist (Part 2)

On Friday I was lucky enough to experience the most amazing facial from Totally Skin & Beauty , all courtesy of Vaniday!

If you missed my last post, Vaniday is the latest beauty and wellness booking website and app. You can find, compare and book anything from a haircut to a massage, anywhere, anytime!

In the days leading up to the appointment, Vaniday sent me a reminder email, which was great as I nearly did forget!

Once I arrived at Totally Skin & Beauty (located on flinders lane), I was greeted warmly and offered a cup of tea. Maryan introduced herself as my beauty consultant and quizzed me on the concerns of my skin and the products I used. She then talked me through each step of the service and how it would benefit my skin.

Maryan was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel totally relaxed during the service. (I was so comfortable, I could have fallen asleep!)
Although my skin is fairly low maintenance, I still needed a good scrub to help by skin glow! Maryan suggested this product for me, which has been amazing so far.

Overall, Maryan and Totally Skin & Beauty was absolutely amazing and I cannot recommend it enough!
