SKIN

Since transitioning to my lifestyle to a slower, more thoughtful one I noticed that I was still using a lot of skin care products.

Why did I use so many? Because I was told my skin wasn’t good enough by the media, being bombarded with endless images of photoshopped people with perfect skin using a product that would give YOU beautiful skin can get really tiring! So I decided to use up whatever skincare I had left and repurchase only the things I really loved. I also looked for other alternatives to store-bought, one use products.

While on this journey I noticed that the use of oil in place of moisturiser was a common occurrence in the Zero Waste community. Oils can also be used as a facial cleanser, exfoliator, flyaway tamer, body scrub, body moisturiser. They can also be used for general cleaning and washing clothes. Either on their own or mixed with other pantry staples – oils have unlimited (infinity?) uses.

While I still do use a moisturiser during the day, Jojoba oil is now part of my night time ritual – brush teeth, wash face, moisturise with oil and relllllax. When I first received this beautiful oil, I may have used a little bit too much! Only a small amount is needed to fully cover your face and then massage the rest into your hands and cuticles (multi-use!) I even scrunch my hands through my hair to provide some added moisture in there.

Although I have been using straight Jojoba oil, Naturally Nature has this amazing handmade blend that is full of moisturising oils such as Rosehip and Avocado Oil. These plus the addition of Jojoba oil helps to keep the skin smooth and supple. No need to buy all those expensive moisturisers! The answer is in the oils!

Jojoba oil is technically classified as a liquid wax and closely resembles our skins natural sebum which makes it a perfect moisturizer. It also contains Vitamins A, D and E. Skin rejuvenating fatty acids Omega 6 and 9. Jojoba can also help to balance the skin by soothing sensitive skin and hydrating dry skin. It’s also a great carrier for other oils, which leads me to my next point…

I have had some trouble sleeping as of late. Usually, I can relate this back to inactive days or just too much time on social media. But sometimes it’s just something that happens. To help with this I decided to try some Lavender oil to help calm me before bed.

Lavender oil can be mixed with jojoba oil for a relaxing bedtime massage (although I only use this one as a body moisturiser as essential oils can sting if they come into contact with the eyes).

I also experimented with Rose Geranium Essential Oil added to the Jojoba oil. I found that one a bit too much for a relaxing nights sleep, but it would be great as a hair scent (mix a few drops with an unscented carrier oil and scrunch/smooth through hair) or as a full body scent when mixed with moisturiser or a carrier oil. Heavenly!

The key to finding the right oil for you is research and experimentation on your skin. different skin types react in different ways and sometimes its instant and other times it may take a month or so. If you find an oil causes burning or lots of redness, stop using it immediately.
