ZERO WASTE SWAPS

When I began my Zero Waste lifestyle, I found the below swaps were the best way to emit single-use plastics and unnecessary packaging from my life. I’m not saying you need to rush out and buy a Keepcup or a brand new canvas bag, instead look to what you already have inside your home to make these swaps

REUSABLE BAGS instead of PLASTIC BAGS

This is one of the easiest swaps. Everyone has some sort of reusable bag floating around their house, if not – “borrow” one from a friend or buy one from the op shop and put it in your handbag or keep it near the door or in your car. That way you will always have one near you and won’t have to use a plastic bag.

When buying fruit and vegetables, consider letting them go “naked” (they have their own natural skins) or using some cloth produce bags. These can be bought or you can even sew them up yourself. Try to choose a natural fabric so they can decompose when no longer needed.

I use some lingerie bags and clothing bags from when I purchased clothing

I recommend:
Ever Eco
4My Earth Bags
ONYA

REUSABLE COFFEE CUP instead of TAKEAWAY CUPS

I’ve never been one to purchase a takeaway drink often, basically because I like to make it at home to save money. But I did purchase a takeaway coffee mug from T2 a few years ago to carry my smoothies and teas out and about. I still have it, but I recently upgraded to a Keep Cup as I just love the look. I pursued my fiancé to purchase one too as he travels for work a lot.

A travel mug isn’t a necessary Zero Waste purchase, but it does make getting a coffee a lot easier! You could also use an old glass jar or even just grab a mug from the cupboard. Some places even offer a discount for using your own cup.

Nothing annoys me more when I see people having a ‘takeaway’ coffee sitting down. It would be so much better for you and the environment to sip your beverage out of ceramic, glass or BPA free cup.

REUSABLE STRAWS instead of PLASTIC STRAWS

Every time I see an old photo of me holding a drink with a straw in it, I cringe. Plastic straws are one of the worst things for the environment – Do I really need to link the video of the turtle with a straw stuck up his nose?

I could rant on forever about the evils of straws (read about it here), but instead, I will show you some pretty alternatives. Or you could even just go straw free – remember to say “no straw please” when out an about.

I recommend:
Glass Straw
Stainless Steel Straw
Bamboo Straw
eBay

REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE instead of PLASTIC DRINK BOTTLE

Despite never being one to buy bottled water when out, I love the idea of a reusable drink bottle. I actually used to refill a VOSS glass bottle and use that as my dink bottle, but after smashing quite a few – I decided to purchase a stainless steel bottle. It has actually been a great choice, not only am I drinking cleaner water (plastic particles leak into the water in plastic bottles), I am saving money by not buying water when out and about!

I purchased my little bottle from here, there are so many other brands out there. I recommend Biome, Shop Naturally, and The Source. They all carry their own brand or many brands of reusable drink bottles.

BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSH instead of PLASTIC TOOTHBRUSH

In Australia, over 30 million toothbrushes are used and disposed of by Australians each year, amounting to approximately 1000 tonnes of landfill each year! So basically, your very first toothbrush is still lurking in landfill somewhere…
I made the switch to bamboo toothbrushes months ago now, I found that they felt better in my mouth and I wasn’t using any plastic. WIN!

Although, most bamboo toothbrushes do have nylon bristles which cannot decompose like the handle can. I keep my old bamboo toothbrushes for cleaning, but the best way to dispose of them is to snap the head off or pull out the bristles then put the handle in your compost and the bristles in a jar to prevent them going into landfill. I know this is what Bea Johnson of Zero Waste Home does.

I purchase my bamboo toothbrushes from an organics store on Smith St, but all the stores I linked above carry a variety of brand with the Environmental Toothbrush being a popular choice.

MENSTRUAL CUP instead of TAMPONS/PADS

Since an average person menstruates for forty years and uses approximately 20 tampons/pads per cycle (240 tampons/pads each year). They will use around 9,600 tampons/pads for their entire menstrual lifecycle. Most of these are FLUSHED down the toilet!!!

I honestly cannot sing the praises of using a menstrual cup instead of a tampon! It has honestly been one of the biggest changes of my zero waste journey!

Yes, it does take a bit of getting used to, but once I got the hang of it – I found it easy. There is a ton of helpful information on how to use a cup online and the brands themselves answer any questions you have.

The brand I use is JuJu. I chose this one because it was made in Australia and was recommended to me by a friend. Although the cost is more expensive up front, you can save up to an average of $90 a year!

Read more about the environmental issues of the humble tampon here

There are many more Zero Waste swaps I could tell you about, but I might leave those for another post. The above are some of the first changes I made when transitioning to a plastic-free lifestyle. All these changes are environmentally friendly, save you money and contribute to a smaller carbon footprint. They are also better looking than any of the single-use products out there!

So make a change, the Zero Waste/Plastic Free lifestyle is a growing movement
Become apart of it

I discovered these amazing illustrations by Melbourne artist Rebecca Flattley and needed to share them all with you!

“Art and Illustration is something I have always just done, since I was very little and knew how to hold a pencil I haven’t stopped drawing. Through the years I’ve developed multiple styles which has lead me to the line work illustrations I do now mixed with digital colouring, I will occasionally draw realistic portraits however they can be very time-consuming.”

“My ideas for my line work illustrations come from the world and people around me and are commonly mistaken as a reflection of myself. I draw based on trends in lifestyle and women’s fashion. My colour scheme is influenced by print media and style trends. The colours are bold yet subdued to give off an aesthetically warm and feminine vibe. I like to leave my work open for interpretation for females but with the overall core message of empowerment and confidence.”

As January comes to a close I feel that I should do a little wrap of my month. I hope you all enjoy reading and if you do, please leave me a comment I appreciate the <3.

In January I find that everyone is still settling into the year and enjoying the sunshine. For me, I enjoyed the days off where I concentrated on my blog as I have come to realise that this blog is something that I really want to strengthen this year. Ideally, I would love to work part time and dedicate more time to creating content and focusing on the stylist course that I will begin in February.

I also focused on cleaning up the clutter inside my house. I gave my wardrobe a cull (post to come), decluttered the lounge room and shall hopefully have a market stall in February to get rid of it all! Jenny Mustard and Rachel Aust are two YouTubers that I am really loving. They both focus on Minimalism and give great tips if you are looking to start a minimal lifestyle. Another great document is Minimalism: A Documentary about the Important Things.

I also started to record my clothing purchases. I’m doing this to stop over-spending and help myself to create a better wardrobe full of pieces that I will actually wear more than once. To make sure that I keep the wardrobe clear, I rotate the hangers to face away from me and then once I’ve worn the item I put it back in with the hanger facing the right way. this means that I can see at a glance what items I haven’t worn much.

As for my New Year Goals (post here), I’ve kept up to date with most of them:

* Post more content/more often – I have backlogged a fair bit of content to post up soon and have a heap of new ideas for content this year. So excited to share them with you all!

* Shop smarter – This year I have cleaned out my wardrobe and purchased items in better fabrics such as silks and linens. I have also had to purchase clothing for work (but I have kept to my wardrobe standards!)

*Eat healthier/Exercise more – I am still working on creating an exercise schedule for myself. I have found that my work schedule doesn’t leave me with much time to exercise, I am either starting work at 6.45 am and finishing at 4 pm or starting at 11 am and finishing at 8 pm! With my morning shifts, I am so tired that exercise is the last thing on my mind. But I am working on creating the time to be healthier.

*Network more/Make opportunities happen – I do have some exciting opportunities for networking coming up, Keep an eye on my Instagram for them!

*Be more productive – I have stopped the endless scrolling! yay!

*No retail job for Christmas 2017 – I have been searching for open positions but nothing has been a success so far. But I am really enjoying my current job.

Overall, I’ve made a lot of positive changes for the month of January. Hopefully, February will bring a whole lot more!

I have been after a simple shift dress in black for quite some time now. My search started when I saw a girl walking down the street wearing a simple black shift dress, black boots and a “don’t care” attitude, I instantly wanted a dress like hers.

My search was finally over in early November when Landes Warehouse held their famous Warehouse Sale. Now if you have never been to Landes Warehouse, I urge you to go right now! Their stores are literally jam packed with bargains from brands such as Mink Pink, Somedays Lovin, Evil Twin and my personal favourite, Staple the Label.

After a (free!) hot chocolate and meeting the lovely sales assistants, I was ready to shop.
I am pretty sure I could have done 7+ rounds of the store and STILL find something that I hadn’t seen before! Once I had my hands full it was off the change rooms where the girls were unpacking even more stock!

I selected my top 4 and headed to the counter (I seriously could have chosen 10 more pieces but unfortunately my wardrobe is so beyond full!)
Everyone was so polite and I even got to see old friends (Hey Erin!)

Those 4 pieces are sure to become staple pieces over summer. So make sure you visit Landes Warehouse to pick up some unbelievable bargains for yourself or even Christmas presents.

This dress is a perfect LBD for me, (and it was actually an H&M sale item!). Its long sleeves and deep v work together to create a sexy, yet low key vibe. Safe to say it’s now a wardrobe staple!  As usual, I’ve paired it with my leather jacket, a choker necklace (actually a ribbon) and Ray-Bans to toughen it up. Black suede mules and my Nakedvice Olivia bag add a touch of difference to the outfit. And a lace bralette peeks out to add texture.

I’ve also noticed that I rarely wear my jacket as an actual jacket, I just sling it over my shoulders! #Fashun

Contrasting Backgrounds

Usually, I shoot in front of a plain white wall, but this time Reannon and I explored Fitzroy/Collingwood to find different backgrounds to use.
It was fun to explore the different effects that the use of a contrasting background created (how cool is that purple wall!)

I chose a simple outfit of a slip dress and tee that I have been dying to wear for a while now, but the Melbourne weather has been way to temperamental and I absolutely hate that cold breeze that can pick up in the shade! I have also been loving my Gucci Princetown Slippers, they are the perfect shoe to class up a simple jeans and tee outfit. They also transport me back to my Malaysian holiday and how nervous I was to enter the Gucci store at Suria KLCC Shopping Mall in KL!

Yes, it’s true, I’M WEARING COLOUR!

I discovered these ABBA-esque pants on Asos and feel deeply in lust.

I have slowly been adding touches of colour to my wardrobe over the past few months, it started with an army green bomber jacket and has now moved on to a light pink shirt dress and these blush pants.
As always, I will still pair them with my minimal toned pieces to keep true to my monochrome stylings.
